About Playful Pottery and Jules Polk

Jules first fell in love with Vermont and pottery in 1997 in Brattleboro where she was studying International Non-Profit Management at the School for International Training. While earning her master’s degree, Jules began taking pottery classes with Josh Gold in Putney, and soon was spending as much time in the studio as the classroom. While she was overseas, Jules worked with indigenous potters in Sri Lanka and Turkey. Upon returning to the states, she went to Montana to take classes at the Archie Bray Institute, and apprenticed with Cheri Long.

In Montana I experienced the sensuality of wood firing, soda firing and salt firing my work. Through this process, every piece is touched by the atmosphere in the kiln, assuring that no two vessels are ever alike.”

Jules returned to Vermont to settle down in 2000.  Jules worked as the Family Shelter Manager for COTS   (www.cotsonline.org) before leaving social work to pursue her passion for Pottery full time. In 2007 Jules began to volunteer for the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (www.craftemergency.org) which allows her to combine her emergency relief work with her passion for the arts. Jules is also a member of her local volunteer fire department.

Jules currently shows her work in galleries throughout Vermont & at craft fairs throughout New England (click for more info) as well as teaches pottery at Burlington City Arts in Burlington, Vermont.

In late summer 2003, Jules bought her dream home & designed her home studio as well as building her own salt kiln by hand.……stay tuned for photos!
